Study notes that stick
Re-reading a chapter feels like studying, but most of that feeling is familiarity, not memory. The fix is uncomfortable and effective: retrieve first, check second. A mind map is a good tool for this — if you build it the right way round.
The trap of fluency
When you re-read something, it gets easier each time. Your brain reads that ease as "I know this." But recognising material when it's in front of you is a different skill from producing it when it isn't — and only the second one helps in an exam, an interview, or a real conversation.
This is why highlighting and re-reading are so popular and so weak: they're pleasant, and they generate exactly the feeling of learning without much of the substance.
Retrieval practice — trying to recall something before you look at it — feels worse and works better. The effort of reaching for a half-remembered idea is what strengthens it.
The one rule: a mind map you build while looking at the source is a transcription exercise. A mind map you build from memory is a retrieval exercise. Same tool, very different results.
The method
1. Read a whole section first — no notes
Read a chapter or section end to end without writing anything. Taking notes while reading splits your attention and tends to produce a copy of the text's structure rather than your understanding of it.
2. Close the book. Build the map from memory
Put the topic at the center and map what you remember. Work fast, and don't check anything yet.
Two things will happen, and both are useful:
- Some things come out easily. Those are already secure — you can spend less time on them.
- Some things feel like a blank or a vague shape. That blank is the valuable signal. It's precisely what re-reading would have hidden from you.
When you hit a blank, add a node for the gap itself — "the third condition?" or "why does this follow?" — and keep going. Don't stop to look it up; you'll break the flow and lose the other things you were about to recall.
3. Now open the source and fill the gaps
Compare your map with the material. You're looking for three things:
- Gaps — things you didn't recall at all. Add them.
- Errors — things you recalled wrongly. These matter most; a confident wrong memory is worse than a blank.
- Wrong structure — things you attached to the wrong parent. Move them, and ask why you misfiled it.
Because you're only adding what was missing, this step is short — and every addition lands on a question you actually had, which is why it sticks.
4. Turn the map into a self-test
This is where collapsing earns its place in a study workflow. Collapse a branch and you're left with a heading and a number: "Light phase — 5 things". Say those five out loud, then expand and check.
The number is a useful detail. Without it you stop when you feel done, which is usually one item short. With it, you know when you're missing something.
5. Revisit on a spreading schedule
Come back to the same map after a day, then a few days, then a week or two. Each time, collapse everything and try to reconstruct it before expanding.
Spacing matters because forgetting a little and then recovering it is what makes memory durable. Reviewing while it's still fresh feels good and does much less. Because the map lives in your account, the same map is there on your phone during a commute — which is a perfectly good time to do a two-minute recall pass.
Don't rebuild from scratch every time. Rebuilding is for the first pass. After that, the value is in the test — collapse, recall, expand, and only edit the parts you got wrong.
What makes a good study map
Label branches with claims, not topics
"Causes of WWI" is a container. "Alliance systems turned a local crisis into a continental war" is a claim you can defend, question and remember. Claims are far easier to recall than nouns, because they have a shape your memory can hook onto.
Keep one idea per node
If a node contains three facts, you can't tell which one you failed to recall. Split it. Nodes can hold a full sentence when needed, but one sentence should mean one idea.
Include the "why", not just the "what"
Add a child that answers why this is true or what it explains. Isolated facts decay quickly; facts attached to a reason survive because you can rebuild them if you forget the surface detail.
Write in your own words
Copying the textbook's phrasing is the transcription trap again. If you can't paraphrase it, you don't understand it yet — and noticing that is the point.
A realistic 40-minute session

Tomorrow, the last step alone takes five minutes — and it's worth more than another 40 minutes of re-reading.
Where mapping is the wrong tool
Being honest about this saves time:
- Pure memorisation — vocabulary, dates, formulas with no structure. Flashcards with spaced repetition beat maps here.
- Procedures — anything that's a sequence of steps is better as a numbered list.
- Material you don't understand yet. A map of a topic you can't follow becomes a pretty diagram of your confusion. Read for comprehension first.
Mapping is strongest for material with relationships: causes and effects, comparisons, systems with interacting parts, arguments with supporting evidence.
